RHET operates across Scotland through a network of 12 local Countryside Initiatives (CIs). These groups are run by volunteers and guided by staff from our main office in Edinburgh. Project Co-ordinators work with the initiatives to implement our aims “on the ground”.
Each CI has a network of volunteer farmers who act as hosts for school visits onto their farms or who visit classes in schools to talk about their work. All host farms are risk assessed by RHET and farmers can receive training on the best ways to engage with children during their talks and tours.
All of the services RHET provides are free and we rely heavily on time generously given up by our volunteers to implement them. Everyone involved in RHET does so because they care about rural issues, the future of Scottish agriculture and raising the awareness in society that these things are dependent upon.
The mainstay of RHET activities are:
• School visits to farms
• Classroom talks by farmers
• Resource materials for schools
• A range of competitions projects and outdoor education events across Scotland
• Training farmers and teachers in the delivery of this information
• The education programme for visiting schools to the Royal Highland Show
Teachers wishing to make use of any of RHET's services or take part in aone of our competitions can contact their local Project Coordinator.
