Farm Visits

RHET is the lead provider of outdoor education for pupils of all ages, through Farm Visits in Scotland.

We work with our volunteer farmers to facilitate free visits to supplement projects on food, farming and countryside topics. These visits fit many aspects of the Curriculum for Excellence, and are an excellent way of introducing experiential elements to such a project.

The Farm Visit

A visit will typically take one and a half to two hours. Groups will be lead by the farmer who will take them on a tour of the relevant areas of the farm. Depending on the type of farm being used, these may include:

• Steading
• Animal sheds
• Grain stores
• Fields
• Milking parlour
• Areas of forestry
• Ponds

They can also be shown various types of agricultural equipment and may even be able to try sitting in a tractor.

Thanks to funding from Scottish Natural Heritage we offer ,where available, the opportunity for pupils to visit any areas of natural heritage that exist on the farms land such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) or conservation areas. These elements can be useful in outlining some of the work that farmers undertake to help manage the land and conserve and protect the ecosystems of different types of rural flora and fauna.

If a teacher has any specific experiences they wish the children to get from the visit they can discuss this with their project coordinator beforehand and the visit can be tailored to suit.

To book a Farm Visit please follow the link below and fill out a booking form.

Also, by going to the "In You Area" page of this website and clicking on the relevant region on the map you will find details of events and projects going on in your part of Scotland.

Why not have a real farmer visit your class to talk about how they grow the everyday food we eat?

They will bring with them a range of farming props to show you - and we promise they'll clean their welly boots!
