THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY!

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual campaign run by the HGCA to emphasis the benefits of a healthy start to the day as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.

HGCA, the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) and Tesco Scotland have collaborated to produce a competition which encourages Scottish school children to think about the nutritional and physical benefits of a healthy breakfast.  The theme for 2010 was "Breakfast Benefits".

Across Britain during Farmhouse Breakfast Week, farmers, food producers and retailers are encouraged to hold events to promote the idea of starting the day with a healthy breakfast as well as promoting home-grown regional produce

RHET's Farmhouse Breakfast competition challenges children to think about and develop a Scottish breakfast recipe.  In designing their recipe cards the children were asked to consider:

  1. why breakfast is such an important meal
  2. nutritional requirements breakfast provides
  3. what ingredients can go into making a healthy and appetising breakfast
  4. where the ingredients come from (emphasise local or Scottish ingredients) and the journey they make from field to plate

By taking part, schools will be doing their bit as a Health Promoting School and meet experiences and outcomes in a number of curricular areas such as:

  1. Health & Wellbeing
  2. Literacy & English
  3. Social Subjects
  4. Expressive Arts
