A Tractor Goes to School

RHET is very excited to be introducing this project for Scottish primary schools!

The project gives the opportunity to have a working tractor visit your school to use in cross-curricular experiential learning with a focus on Science, Maths and Technology.

On the day, the tractor will be accompanied by a Tractor Dealer or Farmer who will talk to the children about the use of tractors and safety aspects of being around large farm machinery.

This very successful project was developed by the British Agricultural and Garden Machinery Association (BAGMA), used in schools in England, and now RHET have adapted it for the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence.

Children can discuss the following:

  1. How a tractor works and the parts of a tractor
  2. What it does
  3. What is required to keep the tractor running efficiently
  4. Global and environmental factors affecting food production

Finally, children are encouraged to 'Design a Tractor of the Future', thinking of ways to develop the tractor and its technology.

A tractor visit can be used as a one-off, fun event, or to supplement a wider topic.  The project is accompanied by a curriculum-linked workbook that contains enough activities and classwork across all subjects to fill a whole term, should you choose to.

To request a tractor visit for your school please contact your local Project Co-ordinator, or email rhetinfo@rhass.org.uk
