Royal Highland Show

23rd- 26th June 2011

The Royal Highland Show is one of the highlights of the RHET calendar. We are responsible for providing the education programme over the four-day event.

Our main attraction is the RHET Children's Discovery Centre, based in Avenue Q of the showground. The centre is open to anyone and everyone, offering a range of fun, interactive and hands-on activities for children of all ages.

2010 SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

29,903 children visited the Royal Highland Show this year, plus 187,644 adults, making this year a record breaker!!

1289 bread rolls were made

1969 handprints on the World Record attempt wildlife collage

1600 bags of flour were made with 50kg of Robigus wheat

400+ tubs of cream were churned into butter

In 2010, children visiting the RHET Discovery Centre had the opportunity to:

  1. Grind flour from wheat
  2. Cook a healthy dish in the Scottish Government cookery theatre
  3. Bake bread
  4. Milk Mabel the lifesize fibreglass cow in learning the 'Story of Milk'

Other activities included candle-making in the Honey Tent, digging for potatoes, a toy farm for the little ones and creating a colourful badge to take home.  There was a World Record attempt to create a handprint wildlife collage and Charlotte the Cow made an appearance, giving high-fives and handing out milk to the children!

The RHET Children’s Discovery Centre is open to school parties on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th June 2011.

The education programme is available to formal school groups only, and offers:

Bookable education programme sessions

Interactive learning

Educational drop-in activities

Guided tours

Curriculum-linked education packs

On arrival at the show, school groups are greeted by RHET staff and volunteers, who will ensure you find where you need to be as quickly as possible.

Groups have the option of a guided tour of the showground with one of our RHET volunteers and learn all about the different attractions, or head straight to the Discovery Centre to get stuck-in to your chosen activities.  Our tours can be tailored to meet your specific needs, however there is no obligation to participate in RHET activities should groups wish to enter as a school party and follow their own programme.

RHET staff and volunteers are on hand to guide and assist with activities, and RHET are extremely grateful to their dedicated team of volunteers and activity providers who give up their time for education at the Royal Highland Show.  Their expertise and enthusiasm is gladly shared with the children who visit the Children's Discovery Centre, either as members of the public or in a school party.
