Count & Grow with Superspud, sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, encourages children to gain hands-on experience of growing a potato crop in the classroom while simultaneously developing their numeracy skills. Schools are asked to submit a cross-curricular project book outlining progress and associated activity throughout the growing season.

In 2011 the project ran in conjunction with the UK-wide ‘Grow Your Own Potatoes’ competition, organised by the Potato Council, who supplied the seed potatoes to schools and, in Scotland, RHET linked participating schools with local RHET volunteer farmers.  The farmer visits the children in class to help bring the project to life and demonstrate how to plant correctly.

Planting took place in March, with harvesting in June, using seed potato varieties ‘Rocket’, ‘Emerald’ and ‘Smile’.

A huge thank you to all the schools who entered and to all our RHET volunteer Farmers, for helping and advising in the planting of tatties.

Thank you also to the Clydesdale Bank for their support and funding of this competition.
