Dumbarton, Lomond and Renfrew CI

Welcome to the page of the RHET Dumbarton, Lomond & Renfrew Countryside Initiative.

Here you should find all you need to know about RHET's work in the area and take the next step to getting involved, as an educator with your school or as a volunteer with RHET.

If you haven’t already planned your school trip for this session, why not consider getting your class out into the countryside; an educational and fun trip with plenty of fresh air? A farm visit can link with many topics in the Curriculum for Excellence and are tailored to suit the topic you are covering.  We will match your class to a fully risk-assessed farm, and can sometimes even help with transport costs!

Alternatively perhaps you would like a farmer to visit your classroom to talk about their farm, or a particular area of farming?  We have dairy, beef, lamb and arable farmers who volunteer their time to visit schools, giving talks about their work and giving extra depth to a food and farming topic.

Sheila Henderson is the Project Co-ordinator for this area and can be contacted using the details below.

All RHET farm visits and classroom talks are tailored to suit each individual request, and all our services and resources are FREE to schools.

RHET Dumbarton, Lomond & Renfrew is managed by a committee of representatives from the farming community and the education service.

We aim to provide a balanced, reliable and independent source of information about farming, food production and other aspects of the rural economy. The main services we offer are:

  1. Farm Visits
  2. Classroom Speakers
  3. Projects
  4. Curriculum-linked Resources

From 2009 to 2010 RHET Dumbarton, Lomond & Renfrew will have facilitated:

37 farm visits...

50 classroom speaker talks...

...across the area.

We also hold teacher training days where primary and secondary teachers found out how RHET Dumbarton, Lomond & Renfrew can provide resources and services to compliment classroom topics.

Schools can order a range of  classroom resources direct from us. We have a number of interactive materials covering subjects such as meat production, farming across the seasons, standard grade Geography and a newly-developed Higher Biology online resource.

On top of all this, RHET Dumbarton, Lomond & Renfrew is involved with a number of regional and national  projects and competitions, including the Scottish Government Food & Farming days, Count & Grow maths and numeracy potato-growing competition and Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

NB: Limited funding is available to cover transport costs for Farm Visits.

TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOPS:

RHET Dumbarton, Lomond and Renfrew can facilitate teacher training workshops for all age ranges. In the morning, primary teachers see where a RHET farm visit or classroom talk can fit in to the curriculum and how to go about planning a farm visit.  Additionally specific training for Geography teachers is available.  For both workshops, time in afternoon sessions is spent on the farm, with a local farmer attending all day to input practical knowledge.

These workshops are tailored to suit your requirements.  If your council, or cluster group, is interested in doing likewise, please let Sheila know.
