RHET Highland Countryside Initiative (HCI) works to support schools in the region with projects and topics on food, farming and countryside.
We provide year round fully risk-assessed farm visits throughout the Highlands, and provide tailored visits for primary and secondary schools.
(NB: limited funding is sometimes available to cover transport costs for farm visits)
We have a network of trained classroom speakers who can deliver bespoke talks tailored to a range of rural topics from nursery to secondary level.
Schools can order a range of free classroom resources direct from RHET. We have a hands-on nursery resource box and a number of interactive materials covering subjects including meat production, farming across the seasons, Standard Grade Geography and a new Higher Biology resource.
RHET is also involved in a number of regional and national projects and competitions, such as Count & Grow schools potato-growing maths and numeracy project, Farmhouse Breakfast Week competition and more...
All our farm visits and classroom talks are provided by volunteer farmers, as are our local events.
We can also hold teacher training days, where primary and secondary teachers find out how RHET and HCI can provide resources and services to compliment classroom topics.
All our services are FREE to schools!
In 2009-2010, RHET HCI facilitated 21 farm visits in the Highlands and 33 classroom speaker talks in schools.
39 schools in the Highlands are participating in Count and Grow 2010- a maths and growing potatoes project.

TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOPS:
RHET Highland Countryside Initiative can facilitate teacher training workshops for all age ranges. In the morning, primary teachers see where a RHET farm visit or classroom talk can fit in to the curriculum and how to go about planning a farm visit. Additionally specific training for Geography teachers is available. For both workshops, time in afternoon sessions is spent on the farm, with a local farmer attending all day to input practical knowledge.
These workshops are tailored to suit your requirements. If your council, or cluster group, is interested in doing likewise, please let Maggie know.
