Visiting RHS With Children

The Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) have compiled a list of handy hints from teachers and colleagues who have visited previously.

DO:

  1. Visit the RHET Children’s Discovery Centre – so many things to do and see, especially for primary schools.
  2. The Sheep Show is just beside the Education Centre - for primary and secondary schools.
  3. The Countryside Arena: see stick making, thatching, coracle making and horn items.  A great area to have a seat and you don’t need to book.  It’s also a nice area for packed lunches.
  4. The Forestry Area: watch the tree climbing, chainsaw carving and mountain bike demonstrations.
  5. Make use of the packed lunch facility near the Children’s Discovery Centre.
  6. The Motor Zone - very attractive to older pupils.
  7. Try the Forge (marked as an anvil) and see horseshoe production from iron bar to being fitted to the horse.  Hear the noise, feel the heat and breathe in the smell.  There’s lots of action here.
  8. If you want to see milking go to the Clydesdale Horse area and peep in the doorway rather than braving the crush in the cattle building.
  9. See a few animals quickly by visiting the Quality Meat Scotland stand near the Children’s Discovery Centre, where you will see sheep, cows and pigs.
  10. On wet days head to the shearing shed at the north end of the map, its undercover and there’s shearing four times a day.
  11. Secondary school groups will enjoy the Food Hall, but it is very busy for primary schools.
  12. Look out for the wide variety of musicians around the showground.
  13. Lantra are providing careers information for secondary school pupils so do visit their stand behind the main ring.

BEST AVOIDED WITH KIDS:

  1. The Lifestyle Area: expensive shopping area, no interest to kids with pocket money to spend.
  2. Don’t go to the specific horse area when you can see them in the main ring and you can sit in the grandstand in comfort.
  3. The Agricultural Area has hugely impressive machines but the stalls are there with a business focus not an educational one…just look and see.
  4. The Craft Fair - very busy and very specialist.
  5. Avoid the cattle hall, too busy, too serious and the kids can’t see anything for big farmers.
