Food & Farming Day in Stirling

The Royal Highland Education Trust’s annual Food & Farming Day in Stirling played host to over 110 students from four local schools to learn about food, farming and agriculture.

The day started with a mock auction in one of the main rings at the United Auctions auction mart.

Bidding was off to a slow start with a dairy cow being the leading lot, but bids quickly ramped up when colourful turkeys, pygmy goats and a trusty sheep dog were brought into the ring.

After the auction, Doune, Bantaskin, Bannockburn and Limerigg Primary were split into six groups in and rotated around six different learning stations positioned around the auction mart and exhibition hall.

The learning stations covered a wide range of subjects including livestock, machinery, meat production, dairy, fruit, vegetables and cereals. Along with presentations and Q&As, hands-on activities were also enjoyed by the children, including grinding wheat, making healthy smoothies, judging livestock and sitting on a vintage tractor.

Each station was run by volunteers from local agri-businesses and organisations who generously donated their time to share their wealth of knowledge with the students.

Food & Farming Days are held by RHET throughout Scotland. The event in Stirling is held annually and is only possible due to funding provided by The Scottish Government and by the generosity of United Auctions, local businesses and RHET volunteers.
