Super Sonic Spuds Have Lift Off!

Nineteen schools from East, Mid & West Lothian and Edinburgh are taking part in the Super Sonic Spuds project this year.

Teachers were invited to a briefing session where local potato farmer James Logan gave advice on growing and looking after potatoes.

Participating classes have been supplied with Rocket seed potatoes, potato pots and compost in order to grow their own crop of tatties.

Classes have also had a visit from a RHET Lothian volunteer who helped pupils plant their potatoes and gave a talk on how farmers grow and harvest potatoes.

An information pack gives teachers a variety of ideas for linking potatoes to the curriculum and there are three different competitions to enter: Best Class Project; Best Potato Recipe and Heaviest Harvest.

Many thanks to Denholm Potato Growers and Scotmid for supporting this project.
