Week 1 of lambing complete!

Well, the first week of lambing 2021 has flown by! The first of the new arrivals were born on the 25th March which was the date we had planned to start lambing, this doesn’t usually happen so precisely so we’re normally ‘on guard’ for at least the week leading up to this.

‘Uno’ was the first Border Leicester X Texel lamb and needed a little bit of assistance to help him be born. He was followed swiftly by the first Border Leicester X North Country Cheviot twins, ‘Tate & Lyle’. They are all outside now & doing really well.

After that, things have really taken off which is great but exhausting at the same time as you are constantly on watch, it is literally a 24/7 job for a few weeks, (hence why we tie it in with school holidays) with highs and lows along the way.

One of our highs in the first week has been seeing a first time mum nicknamed ‘Lucky’ give birth to a set of twins. ‘Lucky’ got her name last summer after being attacked by a dog. When we found her she had been bitten around her face and neck and we didn’t know if she was going to survive. Thankfully, we managed to treat her injuries and she pulled through and is now the proud mum to 2 little tup lambs.

One of the lows was having a ewe who gave birth to a set of twins but decided that she didn’t like one of them and proceeded to headbutt it & refuse to let it suckle. We had to take the lamb away from it’s mother for it’s own safety but the little lamb got a surprise! Join us next week to find out what happened...

In the meantime here’s a wee video to make you smile!
