Whip up your own cream tea! National Cream Tea Day (25 June 2021)

This year RHET wants to celebrate National Cream Tea Day 25th June 2021 by looking at some of the delicious Scottish produce that farmers produce that make up the cream tea.

Our RHET Lothians Volunteer Committee took on the challenge to create a short film to illustrate how Lothian farmers’ excellent produce can make this delicious treat.

Who doesn’t enjoy a Cream Tea… freshly made scone dripping with homemade jam, topped by a cloud of whipped cream? Delicious!

Volunteers Liz McDougal and Christine Eccles (both having Home Economics backgrounds and links to the farming community), agreed to take this on - with the proviso that a young person should be the star in front of the camera. So the ‘Cream Tea Team’ was formed  adding Liz’s great niece Issy and Christine’s daughter Hannah - both of whom were wonderful. Huge thanks to them both for the hours and effort they contributed.

The Lothian farm produce highlighted were:

  • Wheat milled flour for making the scones
  • Milk to mix into the dough
  • Cream to produce Butter for the scone making
  • Cream for the scone topping
  • Soft fruits including strawberries and raspberries for the jam making.

The Cream Tea Team started with an afternoon of rough script writing and resource listing/collecting along with a virtual dummy “run - through” to plan what they thought could be done and when.

They then needed to get a date when all 4 of them could get together within the set timescale - not easy! Hannah had a full time job, Issy had school and after school activities, Liz had a holiday planned and Christine had other week day commitments…. With one week to to go till submission date... Saturday 5th June was the Big Day ….straight after Issy’s swimming lesson!

Finally they set up and filmed - with Liz showing Issy each stage, Christine setting up/ clearing, Hannah directing/filming and Issy being an absolute star, with lots of laughter, cups of tea… and impromptu changes!

Liz said ‘We didn’t know quite what we’d let ourselves in for and there are things we would change in retrospect, however we all certainly learnt new skills during the 14 hours or so it took!’

We are now pleased to be able to share the ‘Cream Tea Teams’ efforts and hope you are inspired to try producing your own cream tea on the 25th

In the run up to National Cream Tea Day we will share a range of videos and posts telling the story of the ingredients from the wheat to the cream.

If you’re planning your own cream tea we’d love to hear about it  – even if it’s just a few lines and you can send it to training@rhet.org.uk

The Royal Highland Education Trust work very hard to bring farming and the working countryside and its practises to the life of young people and as a charity rely on volunteers and donations to continue their invaluable work.
