Teacher tales from our Journey of Food - Sheep and wool training day

Two colleagues and I attended the RHET, Journey of Food, Sheep and Wool event at Ingliston Pavillion in Edinburgh on Saturday 8th September 2023.

We were introduced to the important role sheep play in the economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future in Scotland. We gained fascinating insight from how farmers are tasked with making decisions to vaccinate animals which can destroy other environmental areas, to how much of our meat is exported abroad.

Next, we engaged in 3 workshops. The first one was about the new resources and activities matched to the curriculum for excellence in regard to all areas of food and farming . From technology, maths, science, literacy, expressive arts and DYW which are all free and are both up to date and easy to use via the resource website https://www.rhet.org.uk/teachers/the-journey-of-food-sheep-and-wool/.  A great resource, which you can just pick up helping to create successful learners.

Workshop 2 was about food technology and one of RHET's new competitions to create, design and make a burger. It also had a calculator for children to use online to records food miles and maps where ingredients have come from. This can be easily adapted in the classroom as part of learning within a context. It is something my colleagues and I cannot wait to do and it ties in with the sustainable development goals.

Workshop 3 covered how wool is carded, spun, and dyed to make wool.  This session showed a great way to felt a stone and we were greatly intrigued, as we had never encountered this before. We loved this so much on our return to school we spoke to our Headteacher and two classes about felting a small bath soap. Materials have been ordered and children can't wait to get started! We also learned how to make an easy friendship bracelet and that wool is much better for the environment.

A great day learning which passed very quickly.  RHET always delivers great courses full of ideas, resources and activities for both primary and secondary for FREE! We also left with lots of free resources and cannot wait to take all our learning forward in our classes.

Thank you to everyone involved: another successful CLPL event that was worthwhile coming out on a Saturday for.
