Bags of Volunteering Opportunities!

We have a wide range of opportunities to get engaged with this Autumn – take a look and see if anything catches your eye.

Food and farming fun

Autumn offers our RHET farmers a fantastic opportunity to take part in food and farming events. With kind weather and Scottish Government funding support many areas are planning more food and farming events than they normally would.

These multi school events, offer bite size out of classroom learning around food, farming and countryside issues. These food and farming events are hugely beneficial to pupils and teachers, and volunteers can also see the remit RHET offers, learn from both organisations in the food industry and experienced RHET speakers, and you are also guaranteed to feel the buzz from being part of a unique learning experience!

Many large organisations also encourage employees to have one or two volunteering days a year. Volunteering at a RHET food and farming event is a perfect opportunity to get involved.

If you know of anyone who would be interested in volunteering at an event please get in touch with your local project coordinator

As part of The Journey Of Food Seeds and Grains, we are relaunching the ‘Reindeer Dust Project’, which is predominantly aimed at early years, but can be adapted to all levels and focuses on storytelling,  sustainability, oat nutrition and production and animal care.

The project involves a story and making sustainable reindeer dust with pupils.  If you are creative with a love of Christmas then find out more and get involved with our campaign to ensure children learn that Christmas needs to be environmentally friendly.  Information on the project can be found here and you can contact your project coordinator if you would like to deliver a reindeer dust session.

Share your farming challenges with schools!

Engineering Educates is a cross-curricular project to promote and develop engineering education for 7-14 year-olds.  The 2022-23 theme is farming and the project aims to raise awareness of how engineering can solve problems in local agricultural contexts.

We are currently looking for farmers to deliver a classroom talk in Jan-Feb 2023 (face to face or online) where they share farming problems they have with a class group.  The class will then work with an engineer to come up with possible solutions to farming problems.

We are looking for farmers with an interest in any of the following areas: Arable, Dairy, Sustainability and environment. A training session will be offered on 16th November to share further information about the project.

If you are interested in getting involved please let your project coordinator know and we can add you to the list for matching with a school
